Welcome to Traffic Engineering

The City of Southfield Transportation Department is responsible for the effective operation of the City’s roadway system.  It operates two divisions – Transportation Engineering and Field Operations.

The basic duties of the Field Operations Division are the maintenance and installation of traffic control devices (signs) and pavement markings (arrows, cross-walks, stop-bars, lane lines and center lines). The department is also responsible for barricading and lane closures of on-going City road projects.

The Transportation Engineering Division reviews all site plans, evaluates major developments with regards to traffic impact, conducts traffic counts and studies, and evaluates and justifies signal timings. The division is also responsible for the placement of traffic control devices (signs, traffic signals and flashers), the management of street lights, the administration of State Highway Funds, and acts as a liaison with other governmental agencies regarding traffic matters.
