Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program
Content
The City of Southfield’s Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program has been established to address vehicle speeding and traffic safety concerns on neighborhood streets. Traffic calming measures are engineering tools that can be built or implemented to slow down or divert traffic in residential areas. Traffic calming reduces the likelihood of crashes and improves safety, mobility, and quality of life for residents. Traffic calming measures can be things you drive over like raised crosswalks or things you drive around like curb bump outs or roundabouts.
Participation in the Program is initiated by a resident submitting a petition for City Engineering staff to review. Upon receiving the completed petition, City staff perform a study based on the concern laid out in the petition. The purpose of the study is to collaborate with residents, assess existing conditions, and identify potential improvements.
