Michigan Green Commutinities
The City of Southfield was recognized for its environmental leadership by the statewide Michigan Green Communities (MGC) program. As part of the annual Michigan Green Communities (MGC) Challenge, local governments are awarded bronze, silver, gold, or platinum seals of achievement. These achievements reflect community leadership in areas such as energy efficiency, climate adaptation and resilience, recycling, environmental justice, and more. The City of Southfield achieved gold status for exemplary action in multiple categories including: planning, economic development, land use, energy efficiency, materials management, water conservation and protection, clean mobility, and community engagement.
The United States Conference of Mayors' Climate Protection Award
The City of Southfield has been recognized as an Honorable Mention by The United States Conference of Mayors in the Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards. The City of Southfield is featured as one out of thirteen communities in the 18th anniversary publication. The United States Conference of Mayors is the official non-partisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are over 1,400 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the Mayor. The primary roles of The Conference of Mayors is: advocacy, networking, city promotion, and best practices.

Charging Smart
The City of Southfield has been awarded a bronze designation as part of the Charging Smart Program. Southfield is the first city in the state of Michigan to earn this designation. The Charging Smart Program is a technical assistance program funded by the US Department of Energy and led by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). The goal of this program is to remove barriers to electric vechicle (EV) adoption. Charging Smart is targeted towards assisting local governments assess policies, educate and engage residents and stakeholders, and enhance the deployment of EVs and EV infrastructure. The Great Plains Institute (GPI) is a leading partner in implementing this program across 127 communities spanning 6 states and 4 Native nations.
