Southfield and Lawrence Technological University have partnered to launch the Southfield Centrepolis SmartZone, part of Michigan’s statewide SmartZone network supporting technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. As Michigan’s business center with more than 10,000 companies and over 100 Fortune 500 firms, Southfield continues to invest in tools that help businesses grow, innovate, and thrive.

Centrepolis began through a joint LDFA with the City of Troy and the Automation Alley SmartZone. In 2015, the district was extended and expanded, officially recognizing Southfield Centrepolis as a SmartZone within Michigan’s ecosystem of universities, industry partners, research institutions, and government agencies.

Located adjacent to LTU’s campus along I-696, Inkster, and 11 Mile, the $3.6 million Centrepolis district spans five acres and supports more than 400 businesses and 4,000 employees across professional, scientific, technical, finance, administrative, and healthcare fields.

The SmartZone also strengthens Southfield’s core business district by encouraging new entrepreneurial activity, improved walkability, roadway and signage upgrades, enhanced stormwater management, and added opportunities for retail, dining, and housing. The district includes the Mark Plaza building at 21411–21415 Civic Center Drive and will continue to grow over the next 15 years through support from the State of Michigan, Oakland County, LTU, Automation Alley, and the City of Southfield.
