America 250 in Southfield

In 2026, the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a defining moment that continues to shape the nation’s story.

In Southfield, this milestone is more than a commemoration. It is an opportunity to reflect on who we are as a community, to recognize the many voices that have contributed to our shared history, and to consider how we move forward together.

The City invites residents, students, families, and community partners to participate in a year long series of events, exhibits, and programs centered on the meaning of “We the People” across past, present, and future.

Year Long Exhibits and Programming

The June celebration is one part of a broader effort taking place throughout the year.

The City will host exhibits and programs at the Southfield Public Library and City Hall that explore civic identity through a local lens and invite ongoing community participation.

Programming will include:

• Community centered exhibits that examine history through multiple perspectives
• Educational opportunities that connect historical events to present day civic life
• Student showcases and public art installations that highlight emerging voices

A featured exhibit will explore the Revolutionary War era while elevating stories that are often underrepresented. This includes the contributions of Native American and Black Americans, including those who served in the Rhode Island Regiment, one of the first integrated military units in American history.

Student Art and Essay Contests

Students across Southfield are invited to participate in the “We the People” Art and Essay Contests, with prizes generously sponsored by Vibe Credit Union.

These contests encourage thoughtful reflection on identity, community, and civic responsibility. Participants are invited to explore what it means to belong, to contribute, and to shape the future through both creative and written expression.

Community Time Capsule

As part of this milestone, the City of Southfield will create a Community Time Capsule to preserve a snapshot of life in 2026.

Residents, students, organizations, and boards and commissions are invited to contribute items that reflect the experiences, values, and stories that define Southfield today.
