The City of Southfield will waive all garage sale permit fees citywide from August 2–9, 2026, for National Garage Sale Day on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Under Southfield City Code, a permit from the City Clerk’s Office is normally required before residents can hold garage sales. During the weeklong event, permit requirements and permit fees will be waived, and registration at City Hall will not be required.

Residents may make or purchase their own garage sale signs; however, signs may only be placed on private property and are prohibited in public rights-of-way. Permitted garage sale hours will remain 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Participation during the fee waiver period will also not count toward the limited number of garage sales residents are permitted to hold each year.

National Garage Sale Day is a great opportunity for residents to connect with their neighbors, give unused items a second life and celebrate the sense of community that makes Southfield such a great place to live," said Southfield City Clerk Gabi Grossbard. "We're happy to waive permit fees and registration requirements for the week to make it easier for residents to participate.

Southfield has recognized National Garage Sale Day annually since 2021 by waiving garage sale registration requirements and permit fees during the week of National Garage Sale Day, observed each year on the second Saturday in August.

Garage sales support sustainability by encouraging the reuse and repurposing of household items while reducing waste. They also foster community connections, help residents declutter their homes, and provide an opportunity to earn extra income.
