Southfield residents are reminded to use caution and good judgment while celebrating Independence Day. Please observe all local, state, and federal laws regarding consumer fireworks and be considerate of neighbors, especially seniors, families with young children, pet owners, and veterans who may be affected by loud noises.

In accordance with the City of Southfield Fireworks Ordinance and Michigan law, consumer fireworks are permitted only from June 29 through July 4, 2026, between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m.

Additional requirements include:

  • Consumer fireworks must meet Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards and may only be sold by licensed retailers to individuals 18 years of age or older.

  • Use is prohibited for anyone under 18 or under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.

  • Fireworks may only be ignited on private property.

  • Igniting fireworks on public property—including streets, sidewalks, parks, schools, and churches—or on another person’s property without permission is illegal.

  • Use of fireworks that results in property damage, injury, or death may lead to misdemeanor or felony charges, punishable by up to five years in prison, fines of up to $10,000, or both.

Violations are subject to seizure of fireworks and municipal civil infractions under Chapter 125A of the City Code. Violations of Section 9.603 carry a $1,000 fine, with $500 remitted to the Southfield Police Department. Other violations may result in fines up to $500 per offense as outlined in Section 1.703 of Chapter 15.

The ordinance was adopted by the Southfield City Council to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the community. View the full ordinance here:
