Southfield Takes Flight for National Paper Airplane Day
May 11, 2026
What starts with a simple fold of paper can spark creativity, imagination, and a little friendly competition.
On Tuesday, May 26 from 4 to 6 p.m., the City of Southfield will celebrate National Paper Airplane Day with Southfield Takes Flight, a family-friendly community event on the front lawn of the Southfield Municipal Campus.
The event will also serve as a celebration of Southfield’s newest public art installation, a large-scale paper plane sculpture that brings movement, creativity, and imagination to our city.
Designed to bring residents together through fun, creativity, and interactive experiences, the event invites kids and families to step outside, design their own paper airplanes, and see just how far their ideas can fly.
Throughout the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to create and decorate paper airplanes at hands-on activity stations before competing in paper airplane flight contests and launch activities on the lawn. Bounce houses and interactive family activities will also be available throughout the event.
As part of the experience, the Southfield Police Department will host live drone demonstrations, giving residents a closer look at how drone technology is used in public safety and helping introduce the community to the growing role of flight technology in everyday life.
Families can also enjoy free fresh mini donuts and a dirty soda bar from Sip ‘N Sweets for up to 150 attendees.
One lucky participant will also have the opportunity to win an intro-level drone starter kit through a special event raffle designed to encourage curiosity and interest in flight and technology.
The event will also feature information about the City’s FlySafe initiative, which helps residents better understand local airspace and safe drone operations in Southfield.
Whether you are launching a paper airplane, watching a drone demonstration, or simply spending time with family and friends, Southfield Takes Flight is designed to celebrate imagination, community, public art, and the excitement of flight in all forms.
