Southfield Parks & Recreation has been recognized for excellence in park design, receiving a 2025–2026 Park Design Award from the Michigan Recreation & Park Association (mParks) for the Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve.

The award was presented during the opening session of the mParks Conference in Lansing on March 3, one of the state’s largest gatherings of parks and recreation professionals. Each year, the conference brings together more than 660 professionals from agencies across Michigan to share best practices and celebrate innovation in public spaces.

The Park Design Award honors projects that demonstrate outstanding achievement in community relevance, accessibility, innovation, and overall impact. Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve was recognized for its thoughtful approach to natural preservation, as well as enhancements that make the space more engaging and accessible for visitors.

One of the preserve’s standout features is the Boulder Garden, an educational landscape element designed to help visitors connect with the natural environment while learning about geology and local ecosystems. Additional improvements throughout the preserve have strengthened its role as a place where residents can explore nature, learn, and gather as a community.

The recognition highlights Southfield’s continued commitment to investing in parks and green spaces that support environmental stewardship, education, and community wellness.

Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve remains a valued destination for residents and visitors alike, offering scenic trails, wildlife viewing opportunities, and unique educational features that celebrate the region’s natural beauty.
