About the Beech Woods Park Improvement Project

Using the 2021 Beech Woods Park Master Plan as a foundation—along with community feedback gathered through surveys and public open houses—the City of Southfield and Oakland County Parks are transforming Beech Woods Park into a vibrant destination for recreation, nature, and community connection. The City of Southfield was awarded a $500,000 grant from the OCP Healthy Communities Park and Outdoor Recreation Investment Plan for the construction of an inclusive playground designed to provide a safe, engaging environment for children of all abilities. Furthermore, the city received a $1 million grant from the OCP Park & Outdoor Recreation Grant Program for the construction of expanded parking, accessible pathways, and improved park access behind the Beech Woods Recreation Center. Construction services are being performed by Turner Construction Company of Detroit, with design and engineering by OHM Advisors of Detroit.

New amenities at Beech Woods Park include a large, state-of-the-art accessible playground, heated restrooms open year-round, a new picnic shelter, overlooking a scenic pond, paved, accessible pathways connecting the playground and shelter, shaded seating and gathering areas, and a new maintenance building providing storage and workspace for park operations.

These enhancements build upon Oakland County Parks’ larger vision to develop 39 acres of Beech Woods Park into a space that offers quality nature experiences, accessible trails and boardwalks, Rouge River access, and restored natural habitats.

Funding for this phase of development was made possible through the OCP Healthy Communities Park and Outdoor Recreation Investment Plan, which includes $1 million in ARPA funding, and $500,000 from the OCP Capital Improvement Program.
