City of Southfield commemorates Memorial Day Ceremony May 23

The city of Southfield will commemorate Memorial Day on Friday, May 23 at 9 a.m. in Southfield Council Chambers, 26000 Evergreen Road. 

The program will include remarks from Southfield Mayor Dr. Ken Siver and Southfield Veterans’ Commission Chairperson Dr. Rodney Caruthers as well as a keynote address by Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren. Reverend Steve Bancroft of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Southfield will provide the invocation and the benediction for the ceremony. The Southfield Veteran’s Commission will present a special plaque in honor of fallen Southfield Police Officer James McMahon to his family who will be in attendance at the ceremony. Officer James McMahon paid the ultimate sacrifice on January 23, 1971, at the age of 25. He was on Telegraph Road near what is now known as I-696 setting road flares when an intoxicated driver struck him while he was out of his car, killing him. Officer McMahon served the City of Southfield for just two months. 

* Please be advised that the outdoor portion of the annual Southfield Veteran’s Day Ceremony will be cancelled due to the construction taking place at the Municipal Campus.
