Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 5. Please remember to set clocks behind one hour before going to bed. It is also recommended that you do a few other household safety checks:

  • Check and replace batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Ensure alarms are working properly and replace the batteries. Replace any smoke alarms that are older than 10 years and Carbon Monoxide alarms that are older than five years.
  • Prepare a winter emergency kit for your car. Car emergency kits can be a lifesaver, especially in wintery conditions. Kits should include items such as: blankets, warm clothes, stocking hats, gloves, flashlights, water, non-perishable snacks, a shovel, jumper cables and kitty litter or sand for traction.
  • Check to ensure your fire extinguisher is in working order. If the needle is in the red, the extinguisher needs to be recharged.

Please note: the city of Southfield’s 2017 Annual Report/Calendar incorrectly advises to set clocks forward one hour at bedtime. Clocks should be set behind one hour at bedtime on Saturday, November 4.
