Sweet Magnolia’s and Silver Garden Events Center were both winners at the 2018 Taste of Southfield hosted by the Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce. Sweet Magnolia’s was voted Best Restaurant for the third year in a row, while Silver Garden Events Center won the third annual Edible Creations Competition.

The annual Taste of Southfield was held on September 11 from 5-8 p.m. at the Best Western Premier Hotel, 26555 Telegraph Road. Featuring over 20 local restaurants, attendees voted on Best Restaurant, selecting Sweet Magnolia’s for the third year in a row.

The event also featured an Edible Creations Competition. The competition, modeled after popular Food Network show, “Chopped,” challenged contestants to create a dish using an assigned mystery ingredient. This year’s competition required participants to create a pasta dish using the mystery ingredient beets. Silver Garden Events Center won the competition by creating a savory beet ravioli. Dishes were judged on presentation, taste and creativity by a panel of five judges.

For the first time, the Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce partnered with Kroger and local nonprofits to work toward zero waste at the event. Leftover food was donated to Forgotten Harvest, St. David’s Episcopal Church and the South Oakland Shelter.

The Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce also donated $500 from the proceeds of Taste of Southfield to the Friends of the Southfield Police Department. The Friends of the Southfield Police Department is a charitable, nonprofit 501 (c)(3) volunteer organization created to provide support and financial assistance for the otherwise unmet needs of police officers, public safety individuals and other members of the community in time of tragedy and hardship.

The Taste of Southfield is one of the city’s premier annual events hosted by the Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce, a full-service Chamber representing the cities of Southfield and Lathrup Village. The Chamber works collectively to support members, build a healthy economy and improve the quality of life in the greater Southfield community.
