Southfield’s Northwood Club of the Toastmasters International is seeking new members who would like to improve their public speaking and presentation skills. The club meets every Thursday (Labor Day through Memorial Day) at 6:30 p.m. in a private meeting room at Kerby’s Koney Island, 25050 Northwestern Highway. The group meets every other Thursday during the summer months.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, the organization's membership exceeds 357,000 in more than 16,600 clubs in 143 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.

The Toastmasters Northwood Club was originally formed in 1953. It is an open club that accepts applications from anyone 18 and older who is seeking to improve their public speaking and leadership skills. “Our members’ backgrounds are very diverse,” added Northwood Toastmaster’s President Bruce Tabashneck. “Several members have been involved with the club for over 20 years and we are always seeking new applicants. I expect guests will find that we are a very active and welcoming club that truly helps our members to succeed in public presentation skills. We really help people to ‘Think Fast and Talk Smart’.”

Each meeting gives members several opportunities to learn how to conduct meetings, give impromptu and prepared speeches, while providing speakers with valuable feedback and constructive suggestions for improvement. Prospective members are invited to attend a club meeting as a guest for free; however, Kerby’s does require a $8.50 food or drink minimum. There is no pressure to participate at your first club meeting – you can simply observe if you wish. Active members pay international dues of $65 USD every six months, plus a one-time new member fee of $20. With Toastmasters, the learning never stops.
