The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects to begin resurfacing Southfield Road, 11 Mile Road to 12 Mile Road in Lathrup Village, on April 29.

During construction, one lane in each direction of Southfield Road will remain open from 11 Mile Road to 12 Mile Road. There will be closures of the Southfield Road/12 Mile Road intersection during two weekends, and 11 Mile Road will be closed at Southfield Road during part of the project.

The following intersection partial closures will take place with dates and detours to be announced:

  • Stage 1 (approximately three weeks):
    • 11 Mile Road will be closed at the west side of Southfield Road starting approximately May 3. Westbound 11 Mile Road traffic will only be able to turn right or left at Southfield Road.
    • Both eastbound and westbound I-696 exit ramps to Southfield Road will be closed, also starting approximately May 3.
    • One lane of Southfield Road in each direction and the center left-turn lane will be open between 11 Mile Road and 12 Mile Road.
  • Stage 2 (approximately three weeks)
    • 11 Mile Road will be closed at the east side of Southfield Road. Eastbound 11 Mile Road traffic will only be able to turn right or left at Southfield Road.
    • One lane in each direction will remain open on Southfield Road between 11 Mile Road and 12 Mile Road.
    • Westbound I-696 exit ramp to Southfield Road will be closed.

Additionally, the 12 Mile Road/Southfield Road intersection construction work will take place on weekends tentatively planned for mid -to-late June and will include closing 12 Mile Road between Evergreen and Greenfield roads. During this work, residential and business access will be maintained. The detour and exact closure dates will be announced. The approximately $4.2 million project is funded with federal funds and contributions from RCOC, Lathrup Village and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program). It includes:

  • Removing and replacing the concrete at the 11 Mile Road/I-696 Service Drive intersection with Southfield Road.
  • Grinding off the asphalt on Southfield Road and repaving with asphalt (expected to start late April and will take approximately six weeks to mostly complete).
  • Grinding off the top layer of concrete pavement at the 12 Mile Road/Southfield Road intersection and replacing it with asphalt (expected to start early summer with weekend intersection closures).
  • Grinding off the asphalt on the first 400 feet of 12 Mile Road west of Southfield Road and repaving with asphalt.
  • Reconstructing some side street approaches along this section of Southfield Road.
  • Repairing curb and gutter and improving storm sewers and drainage along this section of Southfield Road.
  • Installing pedestrian crosswalks that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (expected completion in winter 2025).
  • Upgrading SMART bus stops.
  • Modernizing the traffic signals at the Goldengate/Sunset Drive intersection with Southfield Road.

The contractor, Ajax Paving of Troy, expects the paving work to be substantially completed in early July, with traffic-signal work continuing. This section of Southfield Road carries approximately 37,000 vehicles daily.
