Southfield Human Services partners with The Natural Momma Me Initiative for Infant Safe Sleep Education event
June 17, 2025
Southfield Human Services will host an Infant Safe Sleep Education event on Thursday, June 26 from 12-1 p.m. at the Southfield Parks & Recreation Building, Room 223, 26000 Evergreen Road.
During the event, Heather Johnson Ross, executive director of The Natural Momma Me Initiative, will lead a new infant safe sleep education program aimed at reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The class will educate parents and caregivers on the importance of placing babies on their back to sleep, using a firm, flat sleep surface, and ensuring the sleep area is clear of loose items. Room sharing (but not bed sharing) is also advised for at least the first six months. The program targets families with infants up to 12 months old, emphasizing the life-saving benefits of safe sleep routines. At the conclusion of the class, registered participants will receive a free cribette. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
The Natural Momma Me Initiative, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, supports mothers and their babies by providing cloth and disposable diapers to low-income families. The organization aims to improve the health, wellness, security and independence of the diverse communities it serves. It also offers referrals to affordable care services and environmentally friendly resources, including cloth diaper education, midwifery and doula support, lactation consulting, baby-wearing instruction, maternal nutrition guidance and childbirth education classes.
