Oakland County residents experiencing financial hardship may be eligible to receive up to $2,000 in assistance with water and sewer expenses through the Hardship Assistance Program.

Offered in partnership with United Way for Southeastern Michigan, the program provides emergency relief to households that may not qualify for other assistance programs but still need help managing essential water and sewer costs.

Approved funds may be used to pay up to three months of current water or sewer bills, reduce or eliminate past due balances, or cover essential plumbing repairs needed to maintain service.

Who May Qualify?

Residents may be eligible if they live in Oakland County and receive municipal water and/or sewer services. Households using a private well are not eligible.

Eligibility is based in part on household income, with examples of qualifying monthly income levels including:

• $3,900 for a single person
• $5,300 for a two person household
• $8,000 for a family of four

Residents who are unsure whether they qualify are encouraged to apply. Eligibility is flexible, and individual circumstances may be considered.

Qualifying hardships may include temporary unemployment due to job loss, medical or health care expenses resulting from an accident or injury, divorce, and other circumstances that create unexpected financial challenges.

Up to $2,000 Available Per Household

Eligible households can receive up to $2,000 in emergency assistance. A total of $100,000 is available for Oakland County residents, and funds will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible while funding remains available.
