Household Hazardous Waste & Document Shredding event set for Saturday, April 26 at RRRASOC
April 21, 2025
Residents in RRRASOC’s nine member communities including the City of Southfield can get rid of unwanted and unused household hazardous waste (HHW), electronics, medical sharps, clothing, small household goods and have documents shredded on Saturday, April 26, 2025. This event will be held at the RRRASOC Materials Recovery Facility between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at 20875 Mapleridge Avenue, Southfield. Please enter through the truck entrance. This event is open only to residents living within RRRASOC’s nine member communities. Materials from other communities will not be accepted.
Providing RRRASOC residents with a free, safe way to properly dispose of household hazardous waste items and other household products is an effective way to protect people and the environment. Items accepted as household hazardous waste include oil-based paint, solvents, automotive fluids, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, batteries, smoke detectors, fluorescent light bulbs, medical sharps and unused and expired medications. Items NOT accepted include latex paint, explosives, radioactive waste, or commercial/business waste.
Handle household hazardous waste products with care. Keep products in original containers and don’t mix products together. Containers should be tightly sealed, packed in a box in an upright, stable position and transported in the trunk of a car or bed of a truck.
Simple Recycling – Items accepted include unwanted clothing, shoes, accessories, and other household discards such as kitchenware, tools, toys, and books. For a complete list, visit the Clothing and Textile page at www.rrrasoc.org. Please bag items if appropriate. Keep separate from HHW.
Medical sharps are accepted at this special event when collected in either a designated medical sharps container, available from pharmacies, or a heavy-duty plastic container with a screw on lid (i.e. laundry detergent jug). When using a plastic jug, tape the closed lid securely when it becomes three quarters full and label it as a “SHARPS” container. Following these instructions for medical sharps protects the workers handling them from injury.
Residents may also bring unwanted and broken electronics for recycling and up to three (3) boxes or 100 pounds of confidential papers for shredding.
This is the second of seven HHW events planned for 2025. Residents of RRRASOC member communities may also take HHW to ERG Environmental in Livonia for proper disposal throughout the year. A list of event dates, acceptable household hazardous waste items, and information about ERG Environmental is available on the RRRASOC website at www.rrrasoc.org or by calling 248-208-2270. Events are held rain or shine.
