Fireworks Ordinance and Safety Reminder

Southfield residents are reminded to use caution and good judgement while celebrating the Independence Day holiday this Fourth of July. Please observe all local, state and federal laws relative to the use of consumer fireworks. The recent high temperatures and dry conditions have created a dangerous environment for the discharge of fireworks. Residents are urged to use extreme caution when using fireworks and to be considerate of their neighbors, especially seniors, those with pets or veterans who may be suffering from PTSD.

By city ordinance (which complies with the State), the use of consumer fireworks is only allowed in Southfield during the hours of 11 a.m. until 11:45 p.m. on June 29 & 30 and July 1-4, 2021. Use of fireworks on Monday, July 5, 2021 is prohibited under State law. Use of fireworks is prohibited by minors (Sec. 9.604) and in all public places, including parks, at all times as well as persons under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances (Sec. 9604a). All violations will be subject to seizure and a municipal civil infraction with civil fines and penalties as provided in Chapter 125A of the City Code. Violation of Section 9.603 shall constitute a municipal civil infraction subject to a fine of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). Of that fine, five hundred dollars ($500.00) must be remitted to the city police department. Unless expressly provided otherwise, all violations of any other  section of Chapter 125A shall subject the violator to the civil fines and penalties as provided in section 1.703 of chapter 15 of the City Code, not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00) for each violation.

This ordinance was passed by City Council in accordance with the City’s continued efforts to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Southfield. The full ordinance can be read by clicking on the link below.
