City of Southfield Opens Cooling Centers During Extreme Heat

In response to forecasted extreme heat, the City of Southfield will open cooling centers for residents seeking relief from dangerous temperatures. Extreme Heat Watch: The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch beginning Tuesday afternoon, June 30, through Friday, July 3, 2026.

Forecast conditions include:

- Daytime highs in the mid to upper 90s

- Heat index values of 105°F or higher

- Overnight temperatures remaining in the 70s

- Potential for near-record daytime and overnight temperatures

Cooling Center Locations & Hours

Location: Parks & Recreation Building Lobby

Monday (6/29) – Room 221 9am-9pm

 Tuesday (6/30) – Room 221 9am-4pm, Room 223 4pm-9pm 

Wednesday (7/1) – Room 223 9am-5pm, Room 221 5pm-9pm

Thursday (7/2) – Room 223 9am-9pm

*ONLY* Friday, July 3 Location: Beech Woods Driving Range 22202 Beech Rd, Southfield, MI 48033 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to:

- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

- Check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.

- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, confusion, nausea, or loss of consciousness, should call 911 or seek immediate medical attention.
