The city of Southfield Emergency Management Division will offer free Halloween candy screening on Wednesday, October 31 from 6-9 p.m. at the Southfield Sports Arena, 26000 Evergreen Road. The recommended hours for trick-or-treating in Southfield are from 6-8 p.m.

“The city of Southfield is pleased to offer this valuable service free-of-charge to our community,” said Southfield Homeland Security & Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Wirkus. “This is a convenient way to make sure your child’s Halloween bag is full of only treats and no tricks!”

The Southfield Fire Prevention Bureau will also be on hand passing out free smoke detectors and nine-volt batteries for smoke detectors while supplies last. Residents are reminded to change their smoke detector batteries twice a year when they change their clocks.

Members of the Code Enforcement and Building Department along with other volunteers will also be canvassing the city as part of the City’s Angel’s Night Project. The volunteer group will patrol Southfield streets looking for any suspicious activity as an extra set of eyes for the Police Department.

The candy screening will take place in the lobby of the ice arena. Parking is available in the front and back of the building. For more information, contact Southfield Emergency Management at (248) 796-5990.
