City of Southfield launches Career Exploration Program in partnership with Michigan Rehabilitation Services

Program will provide municipal job opportunities overview for high school students    

The city of Southfield will sponsor a free Career Exploration Program for high school students in partnership with the State of Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) beginning on Friday, April 28 in the Southfield Public Library Auditorium, 26300 Evergreen Road.

The City’s Career Exploration Program is designed to provide high school and post-high school students the opportunity to explore the many career paths available within local government. Participants will meet directly with city professionals to learn about their respective fields and job opportunities available. All sessions will take place on Friday afternoons from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in the Southfield Public Library Auditorium with the following topics:

  • Friday, April 28 – Session 1:  Southfield Mayor Dr. Ken Siver will provide opening remarks followed by a MRS testimonial from former client and current city employee Pleze Moore. This session will also provide a discussion on careers in public relations, marketing, social media & web development.
  • Friday, May 5 – Session 2:  This session will feature career opportunities in public safety with a focus on jobs in the police and fire departments.
  • Friday, May 12 – Session 3: This session will focus on careers in the fields of human services, parks & recreation, and the Southfield Public Library.
  • Friday, May 19 – Session 4: The final session will focus on careers in finance & accounting, building trades and public works.

Participation is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to the first 100 students to register at https://forms.gle/dLnSReVgK2sFHXEv9. Please email student’s name, school, grade and which sessions that they would like to attend. Students registered in the MRS program should contact Pre-Employment Transition Counselor, Kenneth Lindsay directly at (248) 915-2634 or email lindsayk1@michigan.gov to register. All session participants will be responsible for their own transportation to the Southfield Public library.

Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) is a State of Michigan workforce development agency for individuals with disabilities. They work with students in Oakland County schools to provide work site tours, job shadowing, and informational interviews with partner businesses, government agencies and non-profits.
