City of Southfield to hold Plasma Blood Drive May 31
The city of Southfield Fire Department and Emergency Management Division will host a Plasma Blood Drive in partnership with Detroit Hatzalah on Sunday, May 31 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Southfield Municipal Campus in the parking lot located in front of the P&R Building, 26000 Evergreen Road.
With the recognition by the medical community that recovered COVID-19 patient blood plasma can save lives, Southfield Fire and Detroit Hatzalah are partnering with the Mayo Clinic to offer COVID-19 IGG antibody testing. This test identifies candidates eligible to donate plasma that can potentially save lives. Plasma is taken in the same fashion that blood is taken, from a vein in your arm. It’s simple, quick, and painless.
Eligible candidates for testing include:
- Those who have tested positive for COVID-19;
- Those who have had COVID-19symptoms, even without a positive test;
- Those who have had no symptoms, but live in the same household as someone who tested positive for COVID-19;
- Doctors, nurses, first responders, law enforcement agents, and EMS or medical professionals; and
- All donors must have been symptom free for at least 14 days.
Participant Agreement Conditions
The Southfield Fire convalescent plasma drive is intended to determine eligibility for plasma donations. It is not to be used to determine immunity. By participating you are confirming that if your blood comes back as meeting the criteria for plasma donation, it is your intent to donate the plasma if/when you are contacted for donation.
Getting tested without the intention to donate plasma, or using the results to lower your social distancing protocols can be dangerous and runs counter to the intent of the plasma drive. This test is only intended to identify those whose blood plasma can help others stricken with Covid-19. Antibody test results will not be given. If you are eligible for donating plasma, you will be contacted and guided to a nearby lab for your plasma donation.
The event is sponsored by TCF Bank. Pre-register is not required; however, it is strongly encouraged at https://mihatzalah.org/plasma-drive/.
