On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the Southfield Downtown Development Authority hosted its Greet & Eat Engagement Series at the Oakland Community College Southfield Campus, bringing residents, elected officials, and community partners together to celebrate Southfield's first responders. The City of Southfield extends its sincere thanks to the men and women of the Southfield Police Department, the Southfield Fire Department, and Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Southfield Fire Department

The Southfield Fire Department is 113 firefighters strong and is actively hiring toward 124 authorized positions. The department placed its new Tower 5 aerial truck in service in 2026, with two Life Units and four fire engines expected soon. Engines and aerial trucks have been upgraded to Advanced Life Support, and Life 6 provides added EMS coverage during peak hours. The department is also developing a Fire Cadet Program to build the next generation of firefighters. The Southfield Fire Department continues investing in people, equipment, and innovation to provide the highest level of emergency response.

Southfield Police Department

The Southfield Police Department responds to more than 48,000 calls for service each year, makes approximately 1,600 arrests, and issues nearly 4,900 citations annually. Beyond emergency response, the department conducts Active Assailant, home security, and safety presentations, hosts the Citizens Academy, partners with schools, homeowners associations, and community organizations, and organizes community events including Trunk or Treat, the Holiday Sleigh of Giving, food drives, and youth programs.

Southfield Police are not just responding to emergencies. They are building relationships and investing in our community every day.

Southfield Emergency Management and Homeland Security

The City's Emergency Management and Homeland Security division coordinates citywide preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. The team maintains Southfield's Emergency Operations Plan, supports Police, Fire, the Department of Public Works, and partner agencies during emergencies, oversees readiness of the City's Emergency Operations Center, and provides community preparedness education including CERT and senior outreach.

During the event, the division also hosted a Southfield Seniors Safety Workshop, bringing preparedness resources directly to residents.

Emergency Management works behind the scenes and in the community to make sure Southfield is prepared before an emergency happens and ready to respond and recover when one does.

Oakland Community College Southfield Campus

The Oakland Community College Southfield Campus is the future home of the First Responder Training Facility, which will create opportunities for firefighter training, law enforcement education, emergency medical training, and public safety equipment repair and maintenance. Oakland Community College is helping prepare the next generation of first responders right here in Southfield.

About the Greet & Eat Engagement Series

The Southfield Downtown Development Authority launched the Greet & Eat Engagement Series in 2024 to build stronger relationships across the Historic Cornerstone District. The Authority supports business attraction, redevelopment, placemaking, infrastructure, and community engagement, and offers the Cornerstone Comeback Grant Program and a district wide Business Opening Grant to support business and property investment.
