City of Southfield to Celebrate Completion of New Nine Mile Road Pathway with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
November 3, 2026
The City of Southfield will celebrate the completion of a new shared use pathway along Nine Mile Road with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the former Brace-Lederle School, located at 18575 W. Nine Mile Road.
The $800,000 project transformed a stretch of Nine Mile Road that previously lacked a sidewalk into a new 10-foot-wide pathway designed to provide residents with a safer and more accessible route for walking, biking and outdoor recreation.
The new pathway extends along the south side of Nine Mile Road from Evergreen Road to the Southfield Road/Northwestern Highway service drive, improving connectivity between neighborhoods and expanding access to the city's growing pedestrian and bicycle network.
“This new pathway gives residents a safer and more convenient way to travel along Nine Mile Road, whether they're walking through their neighborhood, riding a bike or enjoying time outdoors,” said Southfield Mayor Dr. Kenson Siver. “It's another important step toward making Southfield a more walkable and connected community.”
In addition to improving pedestrian safety, the project will provide amenities including benches, trash receptacles and bicycle repair stations along the route.
The pathway connects to the Southfield City Centre Trail, providing access to the Southfield City Centre district and Northland City Center. It also represents an important addition to the 9-Line, a developing 30-mile regional trail system designed to connect communities along Nine Mile Road throughout Oakland County. Future connections are planned to other regional trails, including the Joe Louis Greenway and I-275 Metro Trail.
The project was supported by $533,648 in federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding awarded through a competitive selection process administered by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). The City of Southfield funded the remaining project costs through Metro Act funds. Construction was completed by Asphalt Specialists, with design and construction management provided by OHM Advisors.
Southfield continues to invest in infrastructure that supports safer transportation options and a more connected community. Another section of the 9-Line, extending from M-10/M-39 to Greenfield Road, is scheduled for construction in 2027. The City has also applied for additional grant funding to improve pedestrian crossings over M-10 and M-39, which would connect the two sections of the trail.
