The city of Southfield, in partnership with The Links, Incorporated, will hold a dedication ceremony on Saturday, October 23 at noon for a new bench the group has donated in front of the city-owned Code House, 22635 Civic Center Drive.

The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of more than 16,000 professional women of African descent in 292 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and the United Kingdom. Chartered in 1993, the Great Lakes Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is comprised of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

“The Links, Incorporated have a national and local focus on walking as a means to improve overall health,” commented Great Lakes (MI) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated President Marlin Williams. “We are pleased and proud to partner with the city of Southfield to enhance the City’s walking trail, underscoring our commitment to a healthier community.”

“We are very appreciative of members of The Links for this generous donation to the city of Southfield,” added Councilman Dan Brightwell. “Many residents will utilize and enjoy this bench as they are out walking in the community.”

The Code House recently received a State of Michigan Historical Preservation & Restoration Award for work completed to preserve this important historic home. The house is typical of the Greek Revival style popular in the 1830s. The home is named for the Codes, a farm family who lived at the property the longest.  At one time, the house also served as a girls’ boarding school.
