The city of Southfield will host the 49th Annual Rouge River Cleanup on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event is a half-day cleanup and celebration of the City’s continued commitment to the restoration and revitalization of the Rouge River. The general public is invited to participate. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Beech Woods Arena, 22200 Beech Road, just south of Nine Mile. Participants will then be transported to designated cleanup sites along the river following registration.

“The Rouge River, which encompasses 126 miles of urban waterway, runs through 48 communities in southeastern Michigan, providing flood relief and rural serenity,” commented Southfield’s Storm Water Manager Brandy Siedlaczek. “The cleanup helps protect this valuable natural resource by removing impediments that block the flow of water—allowing the river to flow freely and heal itself along with affording local residential, education and business communities the opportunity to work together to improve the environment.”

An additional volunteer event will also be held on Saturday, May 18 at Berberian Woods in Southfield to remove invasive plants and weeding from 9 a.m. – 12 noon at the end of Streamwood (walk down two-track lane and cross the bridge).
