City of Southfield to hold Memorial Service for City Administrator James G. Scharret January 14

The city of Southfield will hold a Memorial Service on Tuesday, January 14 at 11:30 a.m. in the Southfield Pavilion to honor and commemorate Southfield City Administrator James G. Scharret. City Hall will be closed from 11:15 a.m. until 2 p.m.; however, the ceremony is open to the public.  

City Administrator James G. Scharret passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2014. Mr. Scharret had been with the city of Southfield in varying capacities for 40 years. He began his career with the City on December 10, 1974 as a Research Analyst and went on to hold increasing levels of responsibility. He was appointed Director of Management and Budget in 1982, Deputy City Administrator/Fiscal Services Director in November of 2004, Acting City Administrator in November of 2006, and as the official City Administrator in January of 2008.  

As the City Administrator, Mr. Scharret was responsible for the daily operations of the City under the direction of the City Council. The City Administrator oversaw the delivery of City services; worked to insure the fiscal health of the community; and continued to maintain a high priority for unparalleled public safety, economic development, planning and redevelopment within the city of Southfield. Among other duties, the City Administrator developed and managed the annual budget; coordinated the strategic planning process; and continuously sought opportunities for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of operations throughout all departments of the City.  

Mr. Scharret was an active board member of the Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority (MMRMA) since 1989 as well as the Southfield Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Southfield Building -More- Page 2 City Administrator Scharret Memorial Service, Continued   Authority Commission, Southfield Economic Development Corporation, Southfield Community Foundation and the Local Development Finance Authority. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University.  

Visitation will take place on Monday, January 13 from 2-8 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak, MI 48073; phone: (248) 549-0500. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, January 14 at 11:30 a.m. in the Southfield Pavilion, 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield, MI 48037. Mr. Scharret will be interred on Wednesday, January 15 at Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park in Livonia (family only).  

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Elizabeth Scharret Memorial Scholarship (Mercy High School, Farmington Hills), the Southfield Public Library and Forgotten Harvest are requested. Cards may be sent to City Administration, 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield, MI 48037 for forwarding to the Scharret family.
