Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force seeks nominations for 2026 MLK Community Service Award

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force, of Southfield is currently seeking nominations for the 2026 MLK Community Service Award. The award honors one individual each year who best exemplifies the qualities of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Nominees must demonstrate a commitment to advancing human and civil rights, be actively involved in community service, and reside or work in Southfield or Lathrup Village. All nominees must be at least 18 years of age. Past recipients and current elected officials are not eligible.
To nominate an individual, complete the nomination form and include a description explaining why the nominee should receive the Community Service Award. Submissions must include the name, address, and telephone number of both the nominator and the nominee.

The City of Southfield was the first city in the state of Michigan to host a Dr. King Peace Walk or march. The inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk took place on January 20, 1986, commemorating the first national observance of Dr. King’s birthday. The event has continued to grow each year and now includes year-round educational and community activities.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force, Inc. is a nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers dedicated to advancing the principles and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 41st Annual MLK Day Celebration will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, followed by a Peace Parade to the Southfield Pavilion and a Commemorative Program at 11 a.m.
