Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force seeks new members

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force Committee of Southfield is seeking volunteers to assist in the planning and coordination of the 2007 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday program, peace walk, essay contest and service award.

The next committee meeting will be held on Thursday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parks & Recreation building located in the Southfield Municipal Complex, 26000 Evergreen Road. MLK Task Force meetings are held every second Thursday at 6:30 p.m. leading to the 2007 MLK Day Peace Walk Celebration on Monday, January 15, 2007 in Southfield.

Southfield was the first city in the state of Michigan to hold a Dr. King peace walk or march. The first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk took place on January 20, 1986, commemorating the first national observance of Dr. King=s birthday. The walk continues to grow in size and scope each year, with year-long educational and community outreach activities.

For more information, call Ann Dillon, president of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force Committee, at (248) 569-4304.
