The new Nine Mile
Road Replacement Bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on Thursday,
October 12 following a short ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for 8:30
a.m. This will be a unique event in that the last construction
barricades will be removed immediately after the ceremony and the new
bridge will then open to traffic.
The new Nine Mile
Road Bridge was constructed as a replacement for the original 74-year
old bridge over the main branch of Rouge River between Inkster and
Beech Roads. The project included the complete replacement of the
beams, deck, parapets and rails, as well as the installation of new
abutment walls and substructure. The new bridge features two thru
traffic lanes, wide shoulders and a bicycle/pedestrian path on the
south side of the bridge separated by a safety barrier.
The new bridge
design was a joint effort of engineering consultants Hubbell, Roth
& Clark (HRC) of Bloomfield Hills and Tucker, Young, Jackson, Tull
(TYJT) of Detroit. Posen Construction, Inc. of Shelby Township was the
contractor for the project with construction activities supervised by
HRC and the City’s Engineering Department. Approximately $1.9 Million
of the total $2.6 Million project cost was provided by the state’s
Critical Bridge Program which provides funds to local communities for
bridge replacement and repair projects. The City’s share of the project
cost was approximately $773,550, with funding provided from the $12.5
million Major Street Bond funds.
