The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force Committee of Southfield is seeking new volunteers to assist in the planning and coordination of the 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday program, peace walk, essay contest and service award.
The next committee meeting will be held on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Southfield Public Library located at 26300 Evergreen Road. All future MLK Task Force meetings will be held every second Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Parks & Recreation Parks & Recreation building located in the Southfield Municipal Complex at 26000 Evergreen Road. The 2009 MLK Day Peace Walk Celebration will take place on Monday, January 19 in Southfield.
Southfield was the first city in the state of Michigan to hold a Dr. King peace walk or march. The first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk took place on January 20, 1986, commemorating the first national observance of Dr. King’s birthday. The walk continues to grow in size and scope each year, with year-long educational and community outreach activities.
