City of Southfield to sponsor Kids’ Day Tuesday, June 24

The city of Southfield will sponsor the 3rd annual Southfield Kids’ Day on Tuesday, June 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on the Civic Center front lawn located at 26000 Evergreen Road (between 10 and 11 Mile Roads).

The free event is geared towards promoting healthy and active lifestyles for children and will feature numerous activities for kids including: a giant inflatable slide and obstacle course, moonwalk, rock wall climbing, extreme air jumpers, free tennis and soccer clinics, PKSA Karate and U.S. Handball Association demonstrations, inflatable basketball, storytelling and kids’ games. The Detroit Lions mascot “Roary” will also make a special guest appearance.

“This event is designed to promote healthy habits and lifestyles for youth,” said Southfield Parks and Recreation Director William Waterhouse. “Michigan has a high obesity rate among children and studies have shown that this can lead to numerous problems in adulthood. We want to encourage healthy habits with young people so that they will grow into healthy and active adults.”

Southfield Kids’ Day is co-sponsored by: T-Mobile, Kinder Kare, Kumon Math and Reading Centers, Asthma & Allergy Foundation, 100 Days to Health and the United Dairy Institute of Michigan (U.D.I.M.). Representatives from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program will also be on hand offering information and free popcorn. Additional food will be available for purchase from Mr. Pita, Metro Beverage and Hungry Howies and Plasterworks crafts will offer make-and-take projects available for purchase.

For more information, call the Southfield Parks & Recreation Department at (248) 796-4620.
