Southfield receives Environmental Protection Agency grant for brownfield assessment

(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) – The City of Southfield Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (SBRA) was recently awarded a $200,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for brownfield inventory, assessment and remediation planning.

The grant was part of $18.6 million in grants issued to 56 communities and organizations for brownfield improvements in the six Great Lake states of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The funds will be used to identify, assess and catalog sites that are potentially contaminated with hazardous substances and to conduct clean up and redevelopment planning needed to remediate sites where pollution or other hazardous substances make expansion or redevelopment difficult. Grant dollars will also be used to coordinate community involvement and outreach programs relative to brownfield redevelopment.

The EPA issued 314 brownfield grants this year nationally, totaling more $74 million. SME Consultants of Plymouth, Michigan provided technical assistance in the development of the grant request. It is anticipated that the city of Southfield will be receive these funds in October 2008.
