Free event will offer fun for the whole family!
(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) - The city of Southfield will host the Southfield 50th Anniversary Community Celebration on Sunday, May 4 from 2 to 9:30 p.m. at the Southfield Municipal Complex, 26000 Evergreen Road.
To commemorate Southfield’s 50th anniversary, the City and its corporate sponsors will host this free afternoon of fun for the entire family. Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund will make a special appearance from 3 to 5 p.m. and will sing and sign autographs. The first 200 guests will receive a free glossy photograph signed by Miss America. Former Detroit Pistons’ player John Long will also make a special guest appearance from 3 to 4 p.m. The event will also include an open house at City Hall featuring a giant, community-sized anniversary cake, as well as the Passport to Southfield program where residents will be able to visit with city departments and community groups to learn more about the City. Every
resident that visits five or more booths will receive a free City of Southfield 50th anniversary commemorative keepsake. The celebration will also include two stages of top entertainment, one indoors and one outdoors (weather permitting), as well as strolling performers such as jugglers, magicians, clowns and mimes. Free ice skating will be available in the Southfield Sports Arena from 2 to 8 p.m. as well as free tethered hot air balloon rides from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Children’s activities will include a giant inflatable obstacle course, interactive gaming area (including Wii, Rock Band and golf and NASCAR simulators), petting farm, hayrides, arts and crafts, air brush face painting and games for all ages. A variety of food will be available for purchase from several vendors. The event will conclude with a special fireworks finale at dusk and offer free admission and parking.
