Southfield Fire Department to honor firefighters for heroism

(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) – The Southfield Fire Department will honor several firefighters for saving an elderly woman at a special ceremony at 10 a.m. on February 19 at Fire Headquarters, 24477 Lahser Road.

Southfield Fire Chief Peter Healy will pin service award ribbons on the firefighters involved in the rescue that took place on October 29, 2007. Southfield firefighters arrived on the scene of a house fire to find an elderly man covered in soot. He alerted firefighters that his wife was still inside the burning house. Firefighters entered the home with a T3 Commander thermal imaging camera to locate and rescue the woman. Within minutes of their arrival, firefighters were able to locate the woman and safely remove her from the burning house. This rescue was the first in Michigan and 68 in the United States using this new technology.

The ceremony will also include demonstrations of the thermal imaging cameras and the firefighters will be available for interviews. For more information, call Southfield Fire Chief Peter Healy at (248) 796-5600.
