Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence selected as one of metro Detroit’s most influential women
(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) – Southfield Mayor Brenda L. Lawrence was recently selected as one of Crain’s Detroit Business magazine’s 2007 Most Influential Women.

Since 1997, Crain’s has presented a list of the region’s “Most Influential Women” every five years. Combined, these lists highlight nearly 250 women who have contributed to the business community of southeast Michigan.

Mayor Lawrence was elected the first female and African American mayor of Southfield in November 2001. She won the Leadership Detroit 2003 “Challenging the Process Award” and the 2004 Distinguished Leadership and Future Leaders Award for Exemplary Leadership from Leadership Oakland. Her accomplishments as mayor also include heading a business trip to Japan to visit with Tokyo Rope Mfg. Ltd., a company which, with the city and Lawrence Technological University, designed and built the Bridge Street Bridge in Southfield, the first of its kind in the U.S., which uses a special polymer material designed by Tokyo Rope for structural reinforcement instead of traditional steel. Mayor Lawrence sits on numerous boards, including: Michigan Association of Mayors advisory board, U.S. Association of Mayors advisory board and nominating committee, Renaissance/Skyline Club Board of Governors, Birmingham YMCA Advisory Board, and Pepsi Community Advisory Board. Mayor Lawrence holds a Bachelor’s degree in public administration from Central Michigan University Lawrence and works as manager of training for the U.S. Postal Service, Detroit District.
