(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) - The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force Committee of Southfield is seeking volunteers to assist in the planning and coordination of the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday program, peace walk, essay contest and service award.
The next committee meeting will be held on Thursday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parks & Recreation building located in the Southfield Municipal Complex, 26000 Evergreen Road. MLK Task Force meetings are held every second Thursday at 6:30 p.m. leading up to the 2008 MLK Day Peace Walk Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2008 in Southfield.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force Committee recently elected the following new officers: President – Barbara Seldon; 1st Vice President – Kenson Siver; 2nd Vice President – Barbara Talley; Recording Secretary – Johnetta Trammell; Corresponding Secretary – Marilynn Hobbs; and Treasurer – Daniel Brightwell.
Southfield was the first city in the state of Michigan to hold a Dr. King peace walk or march. The first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk took place on January 20, 1986, commemorating the first national observance of Dr. King's birthday. The walk continues to grow in size and scope each year, with year-long educational and community outreach activities.
