
(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) - Southfield Mayor Brenda L. Lawrence will be recognized by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for her community health education and awareness initiatives on Wednesday, June 6 at 7:30 a.m. at Inglenook Park, 20901 west 12 Mile Road.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency that administers the Medicare program, will be recognizing Mayor Lawrence as part of their “A Healthier U.S. Starts Here” campaign. The national program is designed to raise awareness about the importance of preventative health screenings and other benefits offered to help prevent and detect diseases like heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. Mayor Lawrence will be recognized for her “Mayor’s Walks: A Healthier City is a Strong City” and the “100 Days to Health” programs that promote healthy living and lifestyles. “A Healthier U.S. Starts Here” is designed to encourage seniors and other Medicare recipients to live healthier lifestyles and to increase awareness of the availability of Medicare coverage of prevention benefits.
The recognition program will feature remarks from local elected officials as well as HHS and CMS representatives followed by a plaque presentation to Mayor Lawrence. Mayor Lawrence will then begin a 1k walk around Inglenook Park followed by light refreshments. The event is open to the general public.
