About the Mayor

The Mayor is the city's chief elected official, selected by the voters to serve a 4-year term. As the city's chief elected officer, the Mayor serves as liaison to other government officials, agencies and boards, at the local, state, and federal levels, representing the City of Southfield.

The duties of the Mayor include serving as signatory on official city documents, bonds, notes and contracts; review and delivery of the annual budget to City Council with recommendations; providing information to City Council concerning the affairs of the city; and maintaining the power to veto ordinances, resolutions and City Council proceedings. The Mayor of the City of Southfield is Brenda L. Lawrence.

  • Mayor Lawrence is the first African-American and woman to serve as the Mayor of Southfield (elected in 2001).
