What is the Rouge River Cleanup?
The Rouge River Cleanup is an annual event that allows the community to work together along with other communities within the Rouge River Watershed for one single cause, to clean up the Rouge River.
Why should you participate in this event?
Every year the Rouge River banks are constantly eroding due to an excess flow of water into the river during rain storms. This excess flow of water washes away river banks and along with it trees and logs. Throughout the year the logs and trees pile up creating logjams. These logjams impede the flow of water through the river. So every year volunteers remove these logjams allowing the river to flow freely.
When is this event?
This event is held yearly on the first Saturday in the month of June.
How does the cleanup day run?
This is an all day event which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone will meet at Beechwoods Arena (Beech Road just south of Nine Mile) to register, and then will be transported to cleanup sites along the river. Plan on getting dirty and wet, so wear old boots and jeans. Lunch and a BBQ following the event is provided for all volunteers. Over Thirty-six years of commitment from the community, businesses and schools have protected this valuable natural resource. The City of Southfield receives tremendous support from area businesses and groups that contribute a great deal of time and effort for this event.
