Southfield Adult Recreation Center 50+ Activities


The Southfield Adult Recreation Center 50+ is committed to helping Southfield seniors get and stay active, physically and mentally, through a number of classes, monthly programs and trip opportunities. The Southfield Scribe, a bimonthly newsletter published by the Center, contains many details about these programs. Some monthly activities at the Center include:

Day Trips
Some of the most popular day trips departing from the Adult Recreation Center 50+ are the Monthly Casino Trips. Participants are able to spend the day at one of the area casinos and, in some cases, enjoy special packages from the casino including coins and/or food vouchers. (Please note that casino packages are subject to change without prior notice.)

Trips are also taken to various events or locations throughout the area including trips to music programs such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, museums or other points of interest. Registration is limited for all day trips and all participants must have proper picture I.D. with them on the trip.

Flyers with further details regarding day trips and other Adult Recreation Center 50+ events are available from the Center office, open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays until 7:00 p.m. All trips depart from the Adult Recreation Center 50+ unless otherwise noted. A bus may be requested to pick up off-site if there are five or more passengers. Off-site bus pick up registration must be completed two weeks in advance. We reserve the right to deny access to any applicants we deem unable to follow the trip guidelines.

Evening Movies
Join your friends at the Adult Recreation Center 50+ for an evening at the movies. Your $1 admission price includes popcorn and punch. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. in the dining room of the Center.

Dining Out
Visit area restaurants for an enjoyable dinner with friends. Transportation cost is $5 (unless otherwise noted); participants pay for their food and tip separately.

Shop Till You Drop
These monthly trips to area shopping malls fill up fast so be sure to reserve your space today! The bus departs from the Adult Recreation Center 50+, usually in the morning, and returns in the early afternoon. That leaves you with at least a couple of hours to hit the sales! Transportation cost is $5 unless otherwise noted.

Staying Active With Parks & Recreation
The City of Southfield offers a variety of programs for seniors that will help you stay active. Programs are offered at many sites throughout the city and include bounce volleyball, tennis, softball, golf, tai chi, water exercise, and line dancing. Beech Woods Recreation & Wellness Center
The Beech Woods Recreation Center is located at 22200 Beech Road. You can contact the office at (248) 796-4670. 

Walk Across America Walking Club
This program is open to all ages and is designed to provide a place to exercise year-round. Membership is good for one year and includes a Walking Club t-shirt. Cost is $15 per person for Southfield residents and $25 for non-residents. For more information, please call (248) 796-4673 or e-mail cbrewer@cityofsouthfield.com.

Senior Bounce Volleyball
Open to women ages 50 and over and men ages 55 and over.
Informational meeting regarding the league will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 15 at the Beech Woods Recreation Center. Anyone interested is invited to attend. League play begins October 29 and is optional.
The game is played by standard volleyball rules except that the ball can bounce once before it is hit. Drop by the Beech Woods Recreation Center and check out a practice, or join in for a little exercise and fun. Cost is $10 for Southfield residents and $20 for non-residents for the season.  Call (248) 796-4673 or e-mail cbrewer@cityofsouthfield.com for more details about practice times.

Senior Drop-In Tennis
We invite you to come and be a part of the fun with another great season of indoor tennis. Play begins Thursday, October 16 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., assignments are determined each week based on attendance. Did You Know?

  • The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for 780 acres of park land and open space at 33 sites throughout the City. Of the 780 acres of park land, over 333 acres are dedicated nature preserves.

  • The City of Southfield is home of Michigan’s first baseball field for children with any physical or mental disability. Working with The Miracle League, the City constructed a special field designed with a custom synthetic turf and handicapped accessible dugouts, restrooms and drinking fountains.
  • The Parks & Recreation Department offers hundreds of recreation programs at facilities which include two nine-hole golf courses, a lighted driving range, a 50-meter outdoor swimming pool, a senior adult center, an indoor athletic field house, an indoor ice arena and a neighborhood recreation center.

  • The Senior Gardens at the Mary Thompson Farm provide plots to over 100 enthusiastic gardeners who offer tours to school and scouting groups. The Senior Gardens have been recognized as one of the best community gardens in the nation by the John Deere Company and have received numerous awards from the Michigan State Fair.
