Beech Woods Recreation Center

Beech Woods CenterBeech Woods Recreation Center, the premier field house facility in metro Detroit, is nestled in the southwest corner of Southfield, on Beech Road just south of Nine Mile Road.

Located inside the Beech Woods Park, Beech Woods Recreation Center features over 17,000 square feet of gymnasium space. The Center has the capability to run three collegiate basketball games simultaneously in addition to four volleyball or tennis courts, indoor golf nets, and a complete wellness/fitness center. Call Pattie Dearie-Koski (pkoski@cityofsouthfield.com) at (248) 796-4644 for more information.

The Beech Woods Recreation Center hosts a number of Southfield Parks & Recreation programs including youth basketball leagues in the fall, winter, and spring. Beech Woods is currently the home of the Southfield Youth Basketball League, Beech Woods Wellness Center, Oakland County Senior Bounce Volleyball League, Junior Michigan Thunderbirds Wheelchair Basketball team, Wheelchair Hockey League, United Auto Workers Basketball League, Junior NBA League, Optimist TriStar events, walking club, numerous aerobic classes, karate, yoga, golf and tennis lessons, volleyball, health and wellness seminars, and youth and adult open gyms.

Beech Woods Recreation Center also offers sporting opportunities for people with disabilities and for seniors ages 50 and over. Adaptive programs include wheelchair basketball, golf and tennis. Senior adult programs include bounce volleyball, tennis and golf. Southfield Sports Arena

The Southfield Sports Arena (located on the grounds of the Southfield Municipal Complex) is a multi-use complex with a regulation NHL ice surface and an Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool. The Arena also hosts several special events throughout the year including Family Swim Parties. There is a snack bar and various vending machines on site providing refreshments.

Outdoor Pool
Summer brings the opening of the pool, along with Family Pool Parties! In addition to the Olympic sized pool, there is a children’s spray pool and 120-foot waterslide. Swim lessons are offered for ages three and up throughout the summer and season swim passes are available for individuals and families. The pool is available for rental for birthday and graduation parties as well as neighborhood gatherings. For more information, call (248) 796-4640.

Indoor Ice Arena 
The Sports Arena ice rink is the perfect place for families wanting to spend time together exercising and having fun! In addition to General Skate hours there are ice skating lessons and drop-in hockey opportunities as well. Skate Rental is available on a first-come, first-serve basis for just $2.50. The skating schedule does vary due to tournaments so please call (248) 796-4640 to check general skate hours. The Arena is also available for rental for birthday or family parties.

P&R Building & Southfield Pavilion


The Parks & Recreation Building is located at the north end of the Southfield Municipal Complex (26000 Evergreen Road). The building houses the main Parks & Recreation offices, the main Information Desk where program registration takes place for numerous classes including dance, aerobic and art classes. Many of the rooms in the Parks & Recreation Building are also available for rental.

Burgh Historical Park


The Burgh Historical Park is one of Southfield’s hidden gems. Located on the northeast corner of Civic Center Drive and Berg Road the park features renovated turn of the century buildings nestled within beautiful manicured lawns and abundant flower gardens offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Gazebo Concert Series
Held each year at the Gazebo at the Burgh Historical Park, these concerts have become a staple of the summer season, not only for Southfield, but for Oakland County. Concerts are held on Tuesday evenings from mid-June through August.

Adult Recreation Center 50+


Located within the McDonnell Towers complex, the Southfield Adult Recreation Center 50+ is a multipurpose, barrier-free facility serving adults age 50 and older. The Center includes a branch of the Southfield Public Library stocked with large-print books, a billiard room, beauty shop and The Bright Spot Co-Op. The Center also offers comprehensive programs including classes, trips, nutrition and outreach programs, and a variety of other services. Some of the most popular offerings include monthly casino and luncheon trips, the award-winning Senior Gardens at the historic Mary Thompson Farm, and various athletic leagues including golf and bounce volleyball. Many of these activities allow seniors the opportunity to participate in athletic competitions at both the city and county level. The Adult Recreation Center 50+ offers the following services, more information about which may be found on the Parks & Recreation Services page:         
  • Medicare/Medicaid assistance
  • Free tax assistance from AARP
  • Meals on Wheels (Mon.-Fri.)
  • TOSS (Transportation of Southfield Seniors) offers assistance with transportation to and from banks and medical appointments.

John Grace Community Center


The John Grace Community Center offers recreational and educational activities for youth and adults. After school, teens can hang out and listen to music, watch videos, play table games, or take part in open gym sessions. Students can also get help with their homework from John Grace staff and the branch of the Southfield Public Library located at the Center during the After School Drop-in program.  Call Pattie Dearie-Koski (pkoski@cityofsouthfield.com) at (248) 796-4644 for more information.

Did You Know?


  • The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for over 780 acres of park land and open spaces at 33 sites throughout the City, including 333 acres of dedicated nature preserves.
  • The Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve won a 2010 Park Design Award from the Michigan Recreation and Park Association.
  • The City of Southfield is the home of Michigan’s first baseball field for children with any physical or mental disability. Working with The Miracle League, the City constructed a special field designed with a custom synthetic turf and handicapped accessible dugouts, restrooms and drinking fountains.
  • The Parks & Recreation Department offers a large variety of recreation programs at facilities which include two nine-hole golf courses, a lighted driving range, a 50-meter outdoor swimming pool, a senior adult center, an indoor athletic field house, an indoor ice arena and a neighborhood recreation center.
