City Departments

Enforcing “American Disability Act” Requirements:

The City of Southfield has been involved with providing sidewalk accessibility under the American Disability Act since 1991. The American Disability Act requires that all intersections with sidewalks must have handicap ramp accessibility. Since the year 2003, warning devices are required to be placed at all handicap ramps. Where there is a gap in the sidewalk, the City has been placing new sidewalk for uninterrupted pedestrian travel. The Engineering Department includes the American Disability Act within its Sidewalk Program, and continues to follow the Standards whenever possible.
