City Departments

Code Enforcement Violations regarding Hazardous Sidewalk:

The Sidewalk Project Manager of the Engineering Department works in conjunction with Code Enforcement to maintain safe and accessible sidewalks throughout the City of Southfield. There are over 240 miles of sidewalk within the city limits and the Engineering Department can only target one area of the city within any given year.

The City of Southfield “CITY CODE” requires property owners; this includes business properties as well as residential properties, to maintain their sidewalks in a safe accessible condition. The Engineering Department has requested that Code Enforcement monitor sidewalks throughout the city. If a Code Enforcement officer notices a sidewalk in a state of disrepair and considers it unsafe, that officer will issue a written notice to the property owner, with a copy going to the Sidewalk Project Manager. The property owner must make the needed repairs within 30 days of receipt of the written notice. In the event the repairs are not made, the City can make the repairs and the property owner is responsible to pay ALL costs within 30 days of completion.
