Welcome to the Southfield Engineering Department

The Engineering Department is responsible for the scheduling, technical planning, design, bid processing, City Council award recommendation, contract administration and actual on-site field inspection and contractor supervision of all City of Southfield public works infrastructure improvement projects.

It is the responsibility of the Engineering Department, either internally or through private consultants, to produce the plans and bid documents for most City projects. The department also works to ensure that the City’s interests are addressed on projects designed by other public agencies, reviews private property site plan submissions with respect to City engineering requirements, issues permits to ensure compliance with City Standards and Ordinances and prepares Special Assessment District Projects and other improvements as may be assigned by City Council. The department also administers and manages the on-site field inspection of the City’s public works construction projects. It oversees a wide variety of projects done in cooperation with private developers and other governmental agencies and provides inspection, materials testing, data collection, construction layout services and other technical assistance to City departments including Parks & Recreation and the Streets & Highways, Facilities Maintenance and Water & Sewer Divisions of the Department of Public Works.

The primary objective of the Engineering Department is to produce projects which result in an optimal expenditure of City funds. In order to achieve this, both the short and long term impacts of project alternatives are carefully considered. The Engineering Department works to provide the City of Southfield residents and visitors with the best infrastructure projects and systems possible.
