Sidewalk Program

Welcome to the Sidewalk Repair and Gap Program

The City of Southfield has over 240 miles of residential and commercial sidewalks. The Engineering Department has a full time staff that has been responsible since 1991 to see that these sidewalks comply with the American Disability Act Standards.

Preventative Maintenance is a key factor in making sidewalks safe for pedestrian travel. Intersections are to have ramp accessibility with ADA required warning devices. Gaps in sidewalks are reviewed and eliminated whenever possible. This could involve only 1 or 2 flags of sidewalk, or several feet of sidewalk. Areas are reviewed and inventoried for spot repair when sidewalks are considered in disrepair. Site plans are reviewed to assure new sidewalks are placed in strategic locations and comply with both Michigan Department of Transportation and American Disability Act Standards.
