Did You Know?

  • The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for 780 acres of park land and open space at 33 sites throughout the City. Of the 780 acres of park land, over 333 acres are dedicated nature preserves.

  • The City of Southfield is home of Michigan’s first baseball field for children with any physical or mental disability. Working with The Miracle League, the City constructed a special field designed with a custom synthetic turf and handicapped accessible dugouts, restrooms and drinking fountains.
  • The Parks & Recreation Department offers hundreds of recreation programs at facilities which include two nine-hole golf courses, a lighted driving range, a 50-meter outdoor swimming pool, a senior adult center, an indoor athletic field house, an indoor ice arena and a neighborhood recreation center.

  • The Senior Gardens at the Mary Thompson Farm provide plots to over 100 enthusiastic gardeners who offer tours to school and scouting groups. The Senior Gardens have been recognized as one of the best community gardens in the nation by the John Deere Company and have received numerous awards from the Michigan State Fair.
