If you're a veteran looking for a job or new employment opportunity in Michigan, see your Veterans' Employment Specialist at the Southfield Career Center or any Michigan Works! Service Center; or call (800) 285-WORKS (9675).

Your Veterans' Employment Specialist will listen to you, ask questions and help you put together a detailed action plan.

Employment Priority
As a veteran you will receive priority status. Specialists can access jobs first and refer veterans before the jobs are available to the general public. Employers who have contracts with the federal government also have a responsibility to give veterans preference in hiring under federal law.

Job Searches
In addition to using the Michigan Talent Bank, local job postings, and other resources, your Veterans' Employment Specialist will use personal knowledge of the local job market to aggressively seek new or upcoming job opportunities by contacting employers on your behalf.

Career Exploration and Planning
Your Veterans' Employment Specialist can work with you to examine career paths, educational requirements, job possibilities, wage potential and other factors important in planning your career. Tools may include interest inventories, personal interviews, skills analysis, and others.

Employment Barriers
Veterans may have other needs that affect their chances of finding a job. The Veterans' Employment Specialist regularly networks with agencies and organizations to obtain services. These may include unemployment benefits, health services, living expenses, transportation, training, adaptive equipment, employer accommodations for veterans with disabilities, and others. Assistance with resume preparation, interview skills, bonding, or resolving problems are also available.

On-the-Job Training Opportunities
The Veterans' Employment Specialist may refer veterans to on-the-job training programs based on eligibility requirements and individual qualifications.

Employer Services
Employers seeking veterans for employment can call (800) 285-WORKS (9675) and ask to speak with a specialist. Military jobs that have their counterpart on the civilian side include information technology, telecommunications, management, office work, plumbing, construction, carpentry, mechanics, truck driving, food preparation and the medical professions.

Michigan Talent Bank
Your Veterans' Employment Specialist can help employers post job orders on the Michigan Talent Bank where they can be searched by Specialists and veterans.

Pre-Screened Candidates
By providing specific candidate criteria, Specialists can pre-screen individuals who have already made the "first cut," saving time and money.

Tax Benefits
Employers who hire veterans are sometimes eligible for tax benefits. The Veterans' Employment Specialist knows all the details.
